Development of non-halogenated fire resistant PC-ABS blend.
25 August, 2020
PC-ABS blends used as a back panel of electronic devices, battery lid covers are required to be flame retardant. Generally Halogenated (mainly brominated) based flame retardant are employed to make plastic flame retardant. Due to environmental concern the need has arisen to look for anti-halogenated and antimony free flame retardant as brominated flame retardant seems to be cause of cancer and other chronic ailments. Several researches has been done to develop eco-friendly flame retardant like from natural materials, using clay nanoparticles to coat the material and making it fire retardant, also ways to entrap the halogen molecules into polymer matrix so they cannot get out of it.
At BEPL presently we are using various halogenated FR additive. As of now we are working on various non-halogenated phosphate based FR additives such as TPP, RDP and BDP. This project aims to develop fire resistant PC-ABS blend using non halogenated additive and to optimise the processing for the same so as to commercialize economically.
